Situated to either side of Carp Lake in Shoufeng Township of Hualien County, Chihnan National Forest Recreation Area spans 144 hectares of Chihnan and Papaya Hill forest districts, and ranges from 140 to 601 meters above sea level. Chihnan (‘South of the Lake’) park makes for a pleasant half-day of picnicking and hiking in the hills for a bird’s-eye view of the lake.
The Chinan National Forest Recreation Area was previously known as Chinan Station. It was the lumber and logging area for the Mugua Mountain Working Circle, a branch of the Forestry Bureau’s Hualien Forest Administration Center. The lumber industry flourished here from 1961 to 1981. After the Forestry Bureau adopted a policy of forbidding any cutting down of natural forests, the logging work of Chinan Station came to an end in 1986, and the area was turned into a forest recreation area.
In order to allow the public to learn more about Chinan Station’s logging era, the Chinan National Forest Recreation Area has set up a forestry exhibition hall at its visitor center. Through the display and introduction of these well-kept tools, visitors can learn about the history and development of Taiwan’s forestry, and understand the hard work involved in early lumbering. Of these tools on display, the most unique is the steam engine head, which was built in the USA in 1910.
On the top of Carp hill, visitors can overlook Papaya Hill, Central Mountain range cliffs, the entire Coastal Mountain ranges, and the river terrace and surrounding valleys, which are not easy for climbing. There are river-eroded terrains where Tongwenlan creek, a tributary of Mugua Creek, was invaded by Hualien, forming a broad dried valley, and then becoming a natural lake, Carp Lake, after years of water accumulation. Visitors can enjoy a fantastic view if they look down to the area surrounding Hualien River, Mugua Creek, Carp Lake, and Lao River. The view of the sparkling Carp Lake and endless hills to the distance is picturesque.
Besides the precious forestry exhibition hall, there are many hiking trails in the park. With rich natural ecology, Chinan National Forest Recreation Area is an excellent place for outdoor activities in eastern Taiwan. If you are lucky, you can also find the fireflies from April to May.
