Beitou is not only famous for hot springs but also for some cultural monuments. There is a place that is worth-visiting when traveling to Beitou. Plum Garden(梅庭) is a place with a two-storey residence which combines Japanese and Western architectural styles. The wooden building has been remained since 1930s. Full of comfortable atmosphere, it’s a nice choice to stroll here after a meal.

Plum Garden is a Japanese-style wooden building that was listed as a historical building by the Taipei City Government and was once the summer gateway home of former Control Yuan president and famous Chinese calligrapher master Yu You-Ren.

This fairly modest two-storey residence combines Japanese and Western architectural styles and dates back to the late 1930s. The spacious courtyard is richly tree-shaded. It’s been richly renovated – the original tatami floors have been replaced with deep polished wooden boards, though the doors and huge windows are the originals – and there’s not much to see here. Even so it deserves a quick stop to appreciate its elegance.
