Kaohsiung Late-Night Café | Hway Coffee
Located in a quiet alley of Kaohsiung’s Xinxing District, Hway Coffee is a late-night café housed in a half-century-old building, formerly the residence of an old ship captain. Outside, a small lightbox sign reads “灰、coffee、taiwan.” Once you step inside, you’re greeted by a nostalgic ambiance – vintage tiles, white iron windows, wooden frames, terrazzo floors, pebble walls, plastic railings, and old-fashioned furniture, all combining to create an irresistible old-house charm.

The walls are covered with various posters and slogans, exuding a strong, committed vibe that paradoxically fosters a lazy, relaxed atmosphere. The visual artist owner frequently organizes cross-industry events and actively promotes local music and contemporary culture. The owner handpicked the music played here, mostly less mainstream yet perfectly suited to the space. Hway Coffee is designed to feel like home – no stress, just relaxation and sharing things you love. It’s an ideal spot for those who want to unwind in the late hours, with the bonus of being pet-friendly. If you can’t sleep, you can bring your dog along for a chill time.

Hway Coffee’s Menu
The café mainly serves light meals such as sandwiches, bagels, and cakes. Surprisingly, dumplings and Japanese fried noodles are also on the menu. There’s nothing quite like having a plate of steaming hot dumplings in the middle of the night. The desserts here are also worth mentioning – aside from rotating seasonal flavors, their regular offerings are equally delicious. The lemon pound cake, with its crispy crust and tangy filling, is a refreshing treat with every bite, especially when paired with an iced Americano. The caramel pudding boasts a smooth texture, combining the rich flavor of egg and milk with the slightly bitter yet sweet caramel sauce, making it satisfying without being overwhelming.

As for beverages, there is a variety of options including coffee, tea, caffeine-free teas, milk, juice, soda, and even alcoholic drinks like cocktails, beer, and spirits. The laid-back atmosphere makes a drink feel especially intoxicating.
