From April to June each year, as spring transitions into summer, the mountains of Taiwan are illuminated by the glowing dance of fireflies, creating a magical, fairy-tale atmosphere. Therefore, we have compiled a list of firefly viewing spots across Taiwan. 頭城休閒農場 Toucheng Leisure Farm
In Yilan’s “Tou Cheng Leisure Farm,” the focus is on respecting the ecological environment while utilizing agricultural production, natural ecology, and rural culture to provide visitors with leisure activities and experiences related to agriculture and rural life. This summer, they are offering a one-day firefly viewing experience! The event starts with a free exploration of the park, followed by a delightful food feast and ecological talks. The highlight of the day is the night firefly viewing. Fireflies thrive in areas with minimal light pollution and clean water, which indicates that Tou Cheng Leisure Farm has a healthy environment, attracting species such as the firefly beetle, red-breasted black-winged firefly, yellow-edged firefly, and mountain window firefly to dance gracefully in the night.

千蝶谷昆蟲生態農場 Butterfly-Garden
Located in Shilin, Taipei, “Thousand Butterfly Valley Insect Ecological Farm” is the largest butterfly garden in northern Taiwan. The farm features over a hundred species of butterflies, as well as a variety of insects waiting for you to discover. The “Glowing Butterfly Dance” experience at Thousand Butterfly Valley is available by online reservation only. The itinerary includes a butterfly ecology tour, butterfly and firefly viewing, and forest rope activities. For every 30 participants, a guiding instructor will be assigned to help you interact with the fireflies and gain deeper insights into their ecology!

東眼山自然教育中心 Dongyanshan Nature Center
The “Dongyan Mountain Nature Education Center,” located within Dongyan Mountain National Forest Recreation Area, offers both a two-day, one-night accommodation experience and a one-day firefly viewing event called “The Legend of Fireflies.” Overnight guests will enjoy meals and have professional guides leading them through the night forest of Dongyan Mountain. The guides will explain the types of fireflies expected to be seen that day, as well as introduce various small animals encountered along the way. The experience concludes with a quiz game, ensuring that both adults and children will have a fantastic time!

飛螢農莊 Firefly Farm
Located in Tongxiao, Miaoli, “Firefly Farm” offers both camping and accommodation areas, surrounded by lush green mountains and a stream flowing through a serene valley. Emphasizing the integration of life, production, and ecology, the farm operates on a small scale, producing local vegetables and providing visitors with freshly harvested ingredients, which is very popular among the public. From March to November each year, different species of fireflies appear in rotation, and the farm offers two types of firefly viewing experiences: one that includes dining and a guided tour, and another that is just a guided tour without a meal.

西湖渡假村 WestLake Resortopia
Located in Sanyi, Miaoli, “Xihu Resort” has recently focused on promoting environmental conservation education, attracting ecological guests like fireflies, frogs, butterflies, and bats to the area! During the transition from late spring to early summer, the green canyon of Xihu Resort is adorned with the rare and enchanting glow of fireflies, earning it the nickname “Sanyi Blue Tears.” It’s also worth mentioning that during the firefly viewing season, visitors might be able to enjoy the beautiful sight of tung blossoms in bloom!

東勢林場遊樂區 Dongshih Forest Garden
Where can you see fireflies in Taichung? The “Dongshi Forest Recreation Area” offers different beautiful scenery throughout the year, along with a rich population of fireflies due to its unique geographical advantages. Research has identified nine species of fireflies in the area. To protect these fireflies, the park does not use pesticides or herbicides. From March to September each year, visitors have the opportunity to see fireflies, with peak numbers occurring around April when thousands of fireflies gather in the area.

奧萬大國家森林遊樂區 Aowanda Forest Recreation Area
The “Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area” in Nantou is situated in a mid-altitude mountainous region, entering the firefly breeding season in April. At least 13 species of fireflies have been spotted here, including the black-winged firefly, red-breasted black-winged firefly, and small red-breasted black-winged firefly! Aowanda offers experiences such as “Visiting the Firefly Goddess” and “Spend a Night in the Forest to Enjoy Fireflies,” led by professional environmental education instructors. Visitors will observe the fireflies’ habitat and learn about their ecological habits, ensuring a memorable experience filled with rich knowledge and the enchanting glow of fireflies.

達卡努瓦賞螢步道 Namasia Dakanuwa Firefly Viewing Trail
The Namasiya District in Kaohsiung boasts a pristine natural environment, and recent efforts have successfully rehabilitated fireflies in the area. Common species include the black-winged firefly, mountain window firefly, and large black firefly. To enhance the firefly viewing experience, the “Dakanuwa Firefly Viewing Trail” has been created, featuring five distinct trails: Nanshalu, Maya, Labinia, Dakanuwa, and Mashinghalan, with a total length of approximately ten kilometers.
It’s important to note that while visitors can enter the Dakanuwa Firefly Viewing Trail on foot, vehicles are not allowed within the trail to prevent disturbance to the firefly population and to ensure safety.
